Analyzing Tourists’ Preferences: Milan’s waterway case

On August 1st, 2021 the volume Tourism and Regional Science edited by Soushi Suzuki, Karima Kourtit and Peter Nijkamp was published in the series “New Frontiers in Regional Science: Asian Perspectives” on Springer aiming at exploring “the  interwoven connections between regional science research and tourism research”

TRElab member Ila Maltese, together with Luca Zamparini, associate professor at the University Of Salento  contributed with a chapter titled “Analyzing Tourists’ Preferences for a Restored City Waterway “.

The authors present the results of a Contingent Valuation survey carried out among  tourists and excursionists visiting Milan in order to elicit their preferences for a project aimed at restoring the ancient urban “Navigli” waterways system.

Visitors would be eager to spend a sensible amount of time to enjoy the waterfront mainly going there on foot or by bike, thus proving that the project would increase active travel options and consequently improve the sustainable mobility of the city.
